:Darwin’s Nightmare:
Movies August 2nd, 2007What a movie ! What a (fucking) World !
Darwin’s Nightmare is a movie/documentary by Hubert Sauper.
I found 2 visuals on the Internet.
So which one do you think fits more the movie than the other ? After watching the movie, the second one is 1000 time stronger than the first ! But the first was the official poster.
What is the movie about ?
The story takes place in a city of Victoria Lake shore, Tanzania side.
At first, it seems like the documentary talks about Nil perch (or the “destroyers” of the 200 others species of the lake), fishermen and the life around the fish.
The why of the second visual.
Fishermen catch fishes and fishes fly with cargos to Europe (but notice that only fish heads are out, in the ground, of the flying cargos !)
And the first visual because the director wanted to denounce the fact that russians’ cargos come with weapons and leave with fishes.
Honestly i haven’t heard about Nil perch until i heard about another fish named panga (looks like a cat-fish).
Some species of fishes become rare. So quite expensive in Europe.
Therefore European markets needed a cheaper fish.
Panga come from south east asia, Mekong river, Vietnam to be more accurate.
Watching a documentary about Panga, I realized that they are from Mekong river ; i couldn’t stop thinking about :
“Panga in Mekong ? People live on Mekong. But they also shit on the river !” Brrrrrr lol
Back to Darwin’s Nithgmare.
What to say about the movie ?
I’m gonna to repeat myself but What a fucking World !
Aren’t we supposed to be born equal ?
Ok in the Real World, there is poor and rich countries.
Vietnam was known years ago as being as one of the poorest countries.
If Vietnam was concidered as being one of the poorest, how countries (a few) from Africa would have been named ? From those countries of Africa, Vietnam might be a “Paradise on Earth”.
The most shocking in this movie is not the real purpose of the movie.
In fact, i don’t really know what was the director’s message thru his movie.
The Nil perch itself ? Fishermen’s life ? hiv virus and prostitution ? Deal weapons/fishes as shown on the first visual above ? … … it is quite confusing.
So for me the most shocking part of the movie was to see that fish fillet is cut in a modern white european standard factory and send to Europe into those russians cargos while fish-heads and theirs carcasses are destinated to villagers inland !
But the way those carcasses are “re-used” by villagers, not even a rat in any westerners countries would even touch it ! (do not say what i’m not saying ; villagers are rats).
I-N-S-A-N-E
After watching a such movie, you probably see Evil everywhere !
On the producer’s website, you can read as the synopsis of the movie :
“Les rives du plus grand lac tropical du monde, considéré comme le berceau de l’humanité, sont aujourd’hui le théâtre du pire cauchemar de la mondialisation.”
(Shores of the biggest tropical lake of the world, known as being the origin of mankind, are nowadays the biggest nightmare of globalization)
The bold part ; at first it seems insignigicant.
But once the movie is over, you are thinking about the title again : “Darwin’s Nightmare“.
Darwin, the first one who talked about species evolution and natural selection.
I told you that Evil is seen averywhere ! If you still follow my point of view, it is like saying indirectly that people from the lake area … … …
It is quite huge so i would like better to not write it down !
The weird thing is that the french synopsis starts by the part above and is followed by “In Tanzania, somehow in 1960, …” but the english one starts by : “in Tanzania, …”
No allusion at all about the origin of mankind !
That is weird.
No screens ; i leave it to yourself : but to have an idea if you have seen “Blood Diamond”, replace the diamond by fish.
